Event Description:
Ashton and Seth Carter are excited to present a joint recital entitled "Seeing Double" on May 16th at the North Lamar High School Auditorium. The concert will feature works for Solo Tuba, Solo Percussion, and two Tuba-Percussion Collaboration premiers by John Wolff and Jim Caldwell. Featured artists include talented musicians in the form of a Tuba Quartet, Percussion Ensemble, and Collaborative Pianists. This performance is free and open to the public. Seth Carter is a freelance tubist and teacher in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex area. A native of Paris, Texas, Seth has had prominent success as a soloist, ensemble musician, and chamber artist. A graduate of the University of North Texas in Music Education/Tuba Performance, Seth is currently the Principal Tuba of the Las Colinas Symphony Orchestra, Garland Symphony Orchestra, and Symphony Arlington. He was the gold medalist of the 2017 Tuba Student and 2020 Tuba Artist Divisions at the Leonard Falcone International Euphonium and Tuba Festival, making him one of a small group of select individuals who have won multiple gold medals at the event. In addition, Seth was invited to perform as a featured recitalist at the 2022 US Army Tuba-Euphonium Workshop. Seth has won or received prizes at the 2018/2022 South-Central Tuba-Euphonium Conference (SCRTEC), the 2022 International Women’s Brass Conference (IWBC), the 2021 North Texas Low Brass Camp Collegiate Solo Competition, and the 2021 International Mock Audition Competition (IMAC). He has participated in several music festivals, including the Sewanee Summer Music Festival, Eastern Music Festival, Rafael Méndez Brass Institute, and Eastman Tuba Euphonium Academy. At Sewanee, Seth was selected as a winner of the Jaqueline Avant Concerto competition and soloed with the Sewanee Symphony. In addition to his work with the Las Colinas Symphony Orchestra, Seth has performed with the McKinney Philharmonic Orchestra, Lone Star Wind Orchestra, North Texas Wind Symphony, the UNT Symphony Orchestra, and the UNT Center Brass Quintet. In the Fall, Seth will begin a master's degree in Tuba Performance at the Colburn Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles and study with Aaron Tindall. Seth is a student of Donald Little and Matthew Good. Ashton Carter is a percussionist and educator living in Houston, Texas. Originally from Paris, Texas, Ashton is currently a Graduate Assistant at the University of Houston, where he instructs the Spirit of Houston Drumline. He serves as the Principal Percussionist of the Moores School Symphony Orchestra and recently performed as a featured soloist in Viet Cuong’s Re(new)al with the University of Houston Wind Ensemble. Ashton graduated with honors from Texas A&M University-Commerce, where he received his undergraduate degree in Music Education. At TAMUC, he became the first student in school history to be awarded both the Most Improved Performer (2019) and Most Outstanding Performer (2022) Awards. He served as the Principal Percussionist for the TAMUC Wind Ensemble and acted as the President of the TAMUC Percussion Association. Active as a snare drum performer, he won first prize in the Black Swamp Snare Drum Competition and the Tierras Snare Drum Competition in 2021. Additionally, he performed as a featured soloist on Michael Burritt’s Spero with the Texas A&M University-Commerce Percussion Ensemble at the Texas Music Educators Association Conference in 2022. In the marching arts, Ashton was a member of the Front Ensemble for the Boston Crusaders Drum & Bugle Corps in 2021. He serves as an arranger of marching percussion at various high schools in the Northeast Texas area. Ashton is a student of Dr. Blake Wilkins and Dr. Brian Zator.
