Join the Maxey House Book Club at the Paris Public Library on Friday, September 27 at 2:00 pm to discuss Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. Summary: When Jacob Jankowski, recently orphaned and suddenly adrift, jumps onto a passing train, he enters a world of freaks, drifters, and misfits, a second-rate circus struggling to survive during the Great Depression, making one-night stands in town after endless town. A veterinary student who almost earned his degree, Jacob is put in charge of caring for the circus menagerie. It is there that he meets Marlena, the beautiful young star of the equestrian act, who is married to August, the charismatic but twisted animal trainer. He also meets Rosie, an elephant who seems untrainable until he discovers a way to reach her. The Maxey House Book Club meets every month to discuss a book with the following criteria: 1) written during the time the family lived in the Maxey House (1868-1966) 2) a non-fiction book about that period 3) a fiction book that takes place in that period For more information, feel free to contact Elana at 903-785-5716 or elana.barton@thc.texas.gov.
